Journaling: The Artist's Way

Hi Actor,

Recently I’ve had the pleasure and irritation of working my way through the 12 weeks of The Artist Way (book). I say irritation there because some days are harder than others and challenge me but I pushed through and preserved – that’s the point too. For growth! Those of you that are familiar with the work of Julia Cameron know all about the ‘Morning Pages’ exercise. It has been a game changer for me. I filter less, I’m clear in thinking and can articulate those thoughts without the fear of judgment. It’s worked wonders for navigating through creative blocks and it serves as a daily decluttering of the mind. When my very own personal limiting beliefs pop up I now have something to do with them.

How to do The Morning Pages

  • Very simply, wake up and grab your pen and 3 pages/ a journal.

  • Start writing – doesn’t matter the "quality" – just start writing about whatever thoughts you are having. (Steam of conscious)

  • Dont stop.

  • Follow the thoughts without filtering.

  • Keep writing till you fill 3 A4 pages and then close the journal and go about your day.

  • The next morning come back and do the same.

  • Same with the next morning and the next. 7 days a week.

What have I noticed since starting my 'Morning Pages' practice?

  • My dreams are more visceral & more memorable.

  • I can process a lot of my creative blocks myself without having to burden my friends with a woeful tale of why I’m failing in some creative capacity … *Whispers* "several times a month"

  • I've noticed it really helps untangle seemingly complicated emotions like shame or anger.

  • I find my work is more colourful, playful and free.

  • I feel like it gives me a fresh slate each day to work from.

  • This exercise acts very much like a daily declutter and cleanse for my brain.

  • It has allowed me to start the day in a state of flow - ideally I would continue that flow state for the remainder of the day/ as long as possible - in essence it’s a great way to practice flow daily - first thing.

I can not recommend ‘The Artist Way’ enough to anyone struggling to discover or connect to their creative self and I can’t get over how much my morning pages has served me. It’s simple and oh so effective. Try it for yourself. Every day, wake up 30 minutes early and write those 3 pages.
