"You are only as good as you can communicate"

Hi Actor. There is a fantastic speaker & teacher Vinh Giang. I remember coming across him years ago. I really enjoyed what he had to say, but more recently i've rediscovered him and started utilising what he teaches in my own practice. He talks on many topics and I highly recommend you search him up and follow his work.

His podcast is here.

His Insta is here.

His YouTube is here.

One key thing he address is the skill of communication. He believes that it drastically impacts the likelihood of someones success. If you are in a lobby, meeting industry folk, let's say your acting skill level is at an 8 but your communication skills are at a 3. What skill level do you think people will perceive you as?

The answer unfortunately: 3

You are only perceived as skilful as you can communicate so in addition to becoming a great actor, we need to develop our abilities in communication. We need to be great communicators. In this post I will give you some ideas on how to practice your communication skills.

Lets have a look at Storytelling, Humour, Familiarity & One Minded Connection.

Whether you are an extravert or an introvert we all have the ability to build upon our social skills.

(Over the next 4 weeks I will be publishing 4 posts, covering in detail how to practice the below skills)

Storytelling

Ever just listened to someone tell a story and they can seemingly, effortlessly, hold the attention of 7 people in the palm of their hand. Incredible right? These people are of a special kind. They are well versed in the skill of storytelling. A reflective practice is the fastest way to tackle this skill.

Humour

Another way into the hearts and minds of those around you is through humour. People often don't remember what you have to say, but rather how you made them feel. So lets make some of these industry people laugh. Everyone likes to laugh right?

Familiarity

The third way to connecting, is though utilising a sense of familiarity within your interactions.

One Minded Connection.

Can you reflect on the last time you had someones full, undivided attention? How did they make you feel? Pretty good right? Now think about the last time you had a conversation with someone where it was clear they were't taking in anything you had to say and were more interested in something else happening. How did that feel? Not great?

Like I said earlier, we often remember people by how they made us feel. So if we want people to remember us in a positive light, lets make them feel great by giving our undivided attention.

Practicing these skills daily and you'll be the life of the party. Your local industry will be itching to work with you. You'll have pros filling up your inbox with job offers and you'll never have to worry about "not working" again. Maybe. 😂

Let me know in the comments, or email me on lachlanstuartactor@gmail.com . What's one thing you do that helps connect you to your local film industry?
