Turn the screen away from yourself and listen to the voice

The 2nd blog, Visual Review (SEE HERE).
Hi Actor,
So we have established our very own weekly taping practice. We Review our work with no sound, just focusing on the visual storytelling. Now we add in a 3rd step. The Vocal Review.
Vocal/ Audio Review
Now that you've watched your tape back with no sound. Start playing the scene from the start again but this time turn the volume up and face the screen away from yourself. That's right, don't watch, just listen.
This is your vocal review. Listen and ask yourself some more questions.
Was I "Off Voice" or "On Voice"?
Did I apologise vocally at any point?
Did I mumble or rush my words?
Did I sound ignited, or bored?
Was there vocal variety and dynamism to my voice or was it flat?
Do I speak through a well supported voice or do I sound like I'm talking from my neck up?
By splitting the visual and the audio, we are eliminating some more of that feeling of overwhelm.
Now we are focusing totally on the vocal storytelling. We are again practicing the skill of critical observation with more specificity. Focusing in and seeing more detail. Limiting our senses to focus on just one.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on the topic of reviewing your work. Feel free to leave a comment below or email me directly. Talk soon.
