Turn off the sound and watch the frame.

Hi Actor,

So we've developed the weekly practice of the 'Record & Review' and are finding it slightly easier to watch ourselves back. Now, lets get a little more specific with our reviewing.

Record

  • Record your scene.

  • Pick your top tape.

  • Come back the following day.

  • Before you review the scene, mute your device.

Visual Review

Watch yourself back with no sound. This is your visual review. Make notes.

  • What do I think was strong about my work?

  • What needs more of my focus next time?

  • Was I moving with intention or is there moments where I was kind of just "floating"?

  • How was my eye lines?

  • How frequently was I blinking?

  • Was I physically "alive" in my performance?

  • Were the movements in the frame clear and direct or scattered?

These questions will now start provoking you to practice with a focus on physicality in your next tape. Here we are practicing the skill of critical observation with more specificity. We are limiting our senses to prioritise just one. Secondly, by cutting out the sound and just focusing on the visual storytelling we eliminate some more of that feeling of overwhelm. If we know we can't stand watching ourselves back, cutting the sound out somehow makes it more manageable.
